Deodorizing with Baking Soda and Essential Oils

I love making a baking soda shake for the rugs and carpets in the house. Not only to deodorize and refresh, but as a flea control if you have pets.

What you will need:

2 lg. glass Jars (recycled Mayonnaise jars work wonderful)
1 spice shaker of cheese shaker (or make your own by drilling holes on the jar lid)
2 cups of Baking Soda
1/4 cup Cellulose Fiber
6 drops of Litsea Cubeba (aka May Chang) or Lemon Verbena
6 drops of Peppermint
9 drops of Lemon
9 drops of Rosemary
15 drops of Orange
15 drops of Eucalyptus
15 drops of Lavender

Put the 2 cups of Baking Soda in one of the jars. Or double the recipe.

In a small bowl, mix 1/4 cup of Cellulose Fiber with the essential oils using a stick or spoon.

Mix well after each oil, so you can get an idea of the final product.

Add this mix to the baking soda in the jar, close the lid and shake well to mix.

Place the jar in a dark place and shake it daily for one week, to make sure the oils disperse properly thru out the baking soda.

After the week is over, get a clean glass jar, and sift the baking soda into it, leaving the cellulose fiber behind. Keep the cellulose fiber in the first jar and label it for future use, just make sure you add the same Essential Oils if you need to make more.

Now, from your sifted product, place the desire amount into a shaker and use on your carpet.

There’s all kind of varieties and scents you can create. Lavender,Ylang Ylang and Mandarin for your closets and drawers. Trouble having peaceful dreams? Lavender, Chamomile and Hops for your mattress.  During the holidays, Allspice, Orange, Clove and Cinnamon, any many others, just make sure you are using “Undiluted Organic Essential Oils”, that is the key.
What is Cellulose Fiber? Small, tan nuggets made from corncob. Used as an effective fixative for absorbing oils and fragrances. May be used on Potpourri, sachets, dream pillows etc...

Other great tips on how to use your mix:

*Add a 1/4 cup to your rinse cycle when doing laundry.

*Add a Tbsp. to the bottom of your trash can.
*Shake on your mattress to refresh and keep unwanted “who knows whats” from it.
*Shake some on the kitty box. Just a bit, about 1 tbsp. is plenty.
*Add about a tsp. to your vacuum bag or canister.
*Put about 1 tbsp in a small Muslin bag a put in your drawers, closets even shoes to get rid of musky smells.

* Add a Tbsp. to 1/2 cup of white Vinegar + 1/2 cup of water + 1 tsp. of dish soap to your garbage disposal and run it while the water runs for 10 seconds. Gets rid of bad smells.

A little goes a long ways, don’t overdo it. Allow the mix on the carpet or mattress to sit for 20 to 30 minutes and vacuum.

If you are using this as much as I do, you will probably have 2 or 3 jars going with different scents, and the longer the mix sits, the stronger the smell.

If needed, I carry Cellulose fiber. 1/2 pound (2 cups) for $4
The Essential Oils, I will mix whatever fragrance suits you. The prices vary according to the oils used.
